RNLI Case Study
‘The RNLI has implemented Daisy’s managed hosting solution to mitigate risk and to help the charity continue its vital life-saving work.’
The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. It provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service around the coasts of the UK and Republic of Ireland, as well as a seasonal lifeguard service on many of the busiest beaches in England and Wales.
Business Needs - In Brief
The RNLI needed a managed hosting solution to guarantee reliability and security, mitigating risk to their reputation and online operations.
Solution
Daisy implemented a fully managed hosting and security solution.
Outcomes
RNLI benefits from a robust, resilient and reliable solution ensuring staff can continue with its life-saving work and their website stimulates secure revenue.
Business Needs - In Detail
As a charity, the RNLI relies heavily on its reputation of saving lives and voluntary donations, legacies and cash raised through sale of items sold online and in its shops. Having a robust, reliable infrastructure to support these activities was vital. The website was increasingly seen as an important method of increasing revenues and meeting business objectives, so its availability, with optimum uptime and easy purchasing facilities had a high priority. RNLI’s existing hosting supplier used ageing servers with inconsistent performance levels. The charity needed a managed hosting solution that would guarantee reliability and security.
Dan Sumner, Web Team Leader at the RNLI said, “Our website attracts visitors from across the world, who kindly donate money or buy merchandise by logging onto www.rnli.org.uk. As an organisation synonymous with being there when people need us, we have to ensure that all communication with us – either face to face, on the phone or online – is at a consistently high level to protect our reputation.”
Solution
Daisy provided the RNLI with a managed hosting and security solution for the main RNLI website and its online shop. Dan Sumner said, “Our IT infrastructure team had been working with Daisy for some years and we were impressed with the fact that Daisy understood how we operate. The Daisy team were able to demonstrate how we can benefit from their business-class solutions.”
Outcomes
Since implementing a managed hosting solution from Daisy, the RNLI has been able to deliver a more consistent, secure online shopping experience for its customers. Using a managed solution ensures the charity’s data is hosted safely, with guaranteed performance and continuous availability.
A robust, resilient and reliable solution enables staff at the organisation to work effectively and productively without having to worry about the IT system behind the website. The hosting solution is fully resilient to any damaging factors, such as power cuts and fluctuations in temperature or humidity levels. Dan Sumner explains, “Although our IT web team is highly professional, it is small, so if we have any maintenance problems it can take up valuable time, effort and personnel. We just don’t have the resources to spend days on end eliminating viruses or ensuring our security measures remain resilient, which is why we chose a managed solution.”
“Daisy has the necessary skills and expertise to provide a fully managed hosting solution and providing technical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Bringing together the expertise and power of the Daisy solution meant that we would realise significant cost benefits in a short space of time. We are delighted with the Daisy solution as it has given us the freedom of not having to worry about maintenance or security issues. This has saved us valuable resource time allowing us to focus on delivering a quality website.”
